FORT YORK ACQUISITIONS FUND
Finding and Looking After the City of Toronto’s Treasures
Images shown above illustrate three artifacts acquired and/or conserved, recently, with the help of the Acquisitions Fund (from left to right):
(1) A portrait of Henry Evatt, c. 1840, required extensive conservation before it is displayed in the Officers’ Mess Establishment dining room. (See ‘Henry Evatt, Barrack Master at Toronto, 1835-1841’ in The Fife and Drum, July 2012, p. 9. The story of his portrait’s conservation treatment, paid for by the Acquisitions Fund, is told by Chief Curator Wayne Reeves in the most recent Fife and Drum: December 2016, p. 11);
(2) A rare British Army copper cauldron, c. 1855;
(3) A portrait of Corporal Tom Lorie and his sweetheart, c. 1802-12
Over the years, items of historical interest vital to Fort York’s story have come up for auction, usually in Canada or the United Kingdom. By and large, the City of Toronto has not been in a position to bid for items since at least the early 1990s, when acquisition budgets were severely restricted. The City has little financial capacity when items of interest relevant to telling Fort York’s stories are offered for sale. We must depend on the kindness of friends and strangers coming to the rescue to acquire these items on our behalf.
Now, friends and strangers have a more sustainable way of supporting this work, through donations to the Fort York Acquisitions Fund. This designated fund supports both acquisitions and conservation of artifacts for exhibit at Fort York National Historic Site. Chief Curator Wayne Reeves expresses the delight of City of Toronto Museum and Heritage Services when he says:
The Fort York Acquisitions Fund will serve a vital need for Fort York. Not only will it allow staff to be nimble in bidding at auctions for artifacts deemed important to telling Fort York’s story, it will also support their conservation, when needed, allowing them to be exhibited.
