SIMCOE DAY
The first Monday in August is marked in Ontario as a municipal and federal holiday. Toronto City Council first fixed the day as a civic holiday in 1875. In 1968, council passed a by-law naming it Simcoe Day after Colonel John Graves Simcoe – Upper Canada’s civil lieutenant-governor and military commander from 1791-96. Simcoe established Toronto (York) in 1793 as the site for a naval arsenal and dockyard in anticipation of war with the United States. The community that followed gave rise to the city that we know today. At Fort York, Simcoe Day is a time for special performances and activities.
